Under Barack Hussein Obama, massive funding cuts to NASA forced U.S. astronauts to have to hitch a ride with the Russians every time they needed to travel to and from the International Space Station. Under Obama, space exploration virtually came to a halt…while NASA refocused its attention on Muslim outreach and climate change.
Former NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said that first and foremost “Obama wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science … and math and engineering.’
NASA was created to conduct space missions, not to study the impact of global warming on the planet. I can’t think of a mission more removed from space exploration than the study of Earth’s climate change, yet President Obama increased funding for NASA’s Earth Science budget from $1.38 to $1.77 billion.
Washington Times (h/t Liz) Donald Trump has now killed Muslim outreach and put NASA on course for a mission to Mars and beyond today, signing a bill that authorized boosting the agency’s current year budget to $19.5 billion and restoring its focus on manned space flights. He added that the boost for NASA also will create jobs in the space industry.
The bill set goals for manned missions, development of the Orion spacecraft for deep space exploration and partnerships with private spacecraft companies. It also called for advancements in space science, technology and aeronautics programs, including health monitoring and treatment of astronauts’ duty-related medical conditions.
Mr. Trump spoke in historic terms about the renewed charge of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which was expanded to include “the search for life’s origins, evolution, distribution, and future in the universe” in at the agency’s mission statement.
Congress has not passed a NASA authorization bill in nearly seven years. The agency hasn’t had its own spacecraft since retiring the space shuttle program shortly after Endeavour flew its last mission June 1, 2011.
President Obama pulled the plug on NASA’s manned space flights and refocused the agency’s research and development on robotics, saying it saved money.
Conservative Review House Science Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican, last week moved a two-year NASA bill through his committee that would shift money away from the Earth Science program to spend on planetary exploration. “There are 13 other agencies involved in climate-change research, but only one that is responsible for space exploration,” Smith said at a recent hearing.
Sen. Ted Cruz, another Texan, who oversees the Commerce subcommittee in charge of NASA, has likewise said it’s time for NASA to refocus on space exploration. At a hearing earlier this year, Cruz said that the “core function of NASA is to explore space” and “NASA in the current environment has lost its full focus on that core mission.”
