Gee, it’s almost as if the threat to enforce our laws has effects.
The nation’s Homeland Security chief said late Wednesday that illegal crossings at the U.S. southern border have seen “an unprecedented decline in traffic” that he says coincide with the president’s new executive orders focusing on immigration laws.
Secretary of Homeland Security John F. Kelly said the drop — as measured by arrests and people halted from entering the country at the border — is around 40% for the first two months of the year. Typically, January and February are busy months for illegal border crossings.
Kelly, nominated by Trump in December to take over homeland security, said the decline “is trending toward the lowest monthly total in at least the last five years.” People apprehended at the border dropped from 31,578 to 18,762, Kelly said.
Still a lot of work to do.
“Since President Trump took office on January 20, we have seen a dramatic drop in numbers,” Kelly said. “This trend is encouraging because it means many fewer people are putting themselves and their families at risk of exploitation, assault and injury by human traffickers and the physical dangers of the treacherous journey north.
You could argue this is now saving lives. So this should be headline news across the world today, congratulating President Trump for such a rousing success less than two months into his presidency.
Ha, who are we kidding. Here’s the nation’s leader in fake news:
It will still take months to figure out if the decrease in apprehensions is an indication of a lasting Trump effect on immigration patterns. Numbers tend to decrease seasonally in the winter and increase into the spring months. But the sharp downtick after an uptick at the end of the Obama administration could fit the narrative that it takes tough rhetoric on immigration — backed up by policy — to get word-of-mouth warnings to undocumented immigrants making the harrowing journey to the border.
Weird how the left is so eager to encourage treacherous and harrowing journeys, not to mention expensive, to poor migrants. It’s almost as if they don’t care about the human toll just so they can score cheap political points.
Another fake news leader checks in with this headline:
Illegal Border Crossings Appear to Drop Under Trump
Appear to drop?
The number of undocumented immigrants caught along the southwest United States border fell significantly last month, which the Trump administration said Wednesday was a sign that its hard line on illegal immigration might already be discouraging border crossers.
That’s some appearance.
Roughly 840 people a day were caught or stopped from entering the United States from Mexico in February, according to Customs and Border Protection, a drop of about 36 percent from the previous February.
Just as significant, the number was down about 39 percent from January, a reversal of a yearslong trend of apprehensions increasing in February as the temperature begins to rise and more people try to cross the border.
The data is likely to please supporters of President Trump and could let him take credit for quickly making good on his promise to clamp down on illegal immigration. “The early results show that enforcement matters, deterrence matters, and that comprehensive immigration enforcement can make an impact,” John F. Kelly, the homeland security secretary, said in a statement.
Shouldn’t this data please all Americans, not just “supporters of President Trump”?
