Passengers tackled a man who tried to enter the cockpit midair on a Malaysia Airlines flight today. According to reports, the passenger claimed to have explosives with him.
Metro He was ‘tackled by 11 others on the flight’ according to a witness, and did not get inside the cockpit.
Flight MH128 from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur returned to Australia shortly after take off today due to the ‘disruptive’ passenger. A photo apparently from the aircraft showed armed police inside while passengers remained in their seats.
One witness said he appeared to be holding an ‘electronic frequency device’ and not explosives.
The aircraft landed safely at Melbourne airport and was sent to a remote bay where the passenger was apprehended by airport security, the airline said.
In a statement, Malaysia Airlines said ‘the operating captain was alerted by a cabin crew of a passenger attempting to enter the cockpit’. The flight turned back to Melbourne. Malaysia Airlines would like to stress that at no point was the aircraft ‘hijacked’.
